A great debut from a huge, up & coming band from LA…Except, this is not their debut. Between the Devil and Two Black Hearts (Devil) is such a departure from the quality sonic grooves of Love and the Apocalypse and other 8mm recordings that one could argue it’s a different band. But that Is a Good Thing my friends, as musical diversity is a hallmark of great and enduring bands; Radiohead & Wilco being fine examples. 8mm’s “Devil” provides sufficient evidence that the writing, instrumental and production skills of this sexy husband and wife led band is capable of crossing genres and standing the test of time. After sampling the Devil, you can easily imagine 8mm opening for bands as diverse as Jack White, Muse or Guns & Roses. Their integration of pop grooves and sonic sound is equally capable of lighting up a club or filling out an arena. 8mm is about to Pop! Find Between the Devil and Two Black Hearts and the rest of the 8mm catalog on iTunes.
Track by Track:
Between The Devil And Two Black Hearts
This great opening duet introduces the world not only to Sean and Juliette, but to their exceptional song writing and production skills.
The second track, Kin, sets the record straight. 8mm can Rock! With Rock and Roll firmly established as the base undercurrent of this entire recording, you are now ready to join 8mm on a journey through their musical universe. Let’s start “Around the Sun”….
Around the Sun
Around the Sun is destined to be a hit just Around the Globe, in Europe. Tasty Euro-pop infused with a highly infectious chorus.
You Brought The Fire
Only the best can write and produce a sonic pop groove like this! That’s not by accident, nor is it due to big budget money. This is Sean Beavan my friends. Oh, did you not know that 8mm is led by one of the best sound engineers in the business?
The Weight of You
Lyrically and musically, The Weight of You is as heavy as its name. I can imaging this track as a big hit at the Bonnaroo festival.
Nothing gets it done better than a Rockin’ slide guitar and a sexy moan! If this song doesn’t Rock Your World, Your DEAD!
Close your eyes and imagine you are listening to Outlaw Country on satellite radio. Remember what I had to say about 8mm’s musical diversity? Given the right A&R circumstances, this song’s a hit across the heart land. One of my favorite tracks.
A great closing track that takes us back where it all began, to 8mm’s roots. Now go buy Love and the Apocalypse!

Whether you are a rock music fan who is not fond of Jazz, or someone who loves Jazz but does not prefer pop music, You are going to like the Jazz Punks. And, if you love both Jazz and Rock, you are going to be ecstatic over the debut CD by the Jazz Punks; Smashups!
We live in an era where simple software on a Mac or PC can enable anyone to try their hand as a DJ. Even non-musicians create new music, by layering and mixing multiple pre-recorded songs into an original composition. We have enjoyed the result of this process called “Mashups” on the radio and in clubs for many years now.
The Jazz Punks bring a fresh and unique approach to the concept of Mashups, in a idiom they have termed “Smashups” https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/smashups/ id516996451?ign-mpt=uo%3D2. Rather than mixing up loops from prerecorded songs as is done in a mashup, the Punks compose original arrangements that tastefully weave classic jazz and rock themes into an entirely new song. Whats more, is these fresh, new compositions are performed by a highly skilled jazz quintet. The result is nothing short of smashing!
Why is this so cool? One listen to “Smashups” and you will understand why the debut CD from this unsigned, unknown quintet from LA shot to the top of the Jazz Radio charts in the U.S. and remains there after many weeks. The mastery is in the arrangements that cleverly blend the melodies of Radiohead’s Creep and Karma Police with John Coltrane. Or the Who’s “I can see for miles” with Miles Davis! Song titles such as Led Gillespie, Clash-up or 12 Steps to Hell clue you into other brilliant compositions to be found on Smashups.
Whether you are a Rock and Pop fan, a Jazz fan or both, you will love the Jazz Punks!
